I was at a stoplight and then it turned green to go and my car wouldn't go. I moved my shifter from neutral to reverse and it made a clunking noise. And then I put it in park back down to neutral to drive and it made a clunking noise. So and then I put it back into Park and then reverse neutral to drive and then it made a small clunking noise and then started proceed forward it almost sounded like I was dragging something under my car I got out of the main traffic pulled over and looked under my car nothing underneath there and then got back in and put it in drive and it made that same clunking noise a couple times and then I ran through my Park reverse neutral drive and then it started going forward again and it got me home but I checked my transmission fluid it was slightly low I put transmission fluid in it. I got home but I'm not sure what direction to look to on what the problem could be. Would you happen to have any suggestions?

Hi,

I need to ask something. If you place the transmission in park without the parking brake, does it roll like it is in neutral?

I ask because it sounds like a broken CV joint or one that is ready to break. Other than the clunking, did the vehicle feel as if it was shifting normally?

Let me know.

Take care,

Joe

Okay, I have a very late reply here and I apologize. So to answer your question, I don't believe my car rolled like it was in neutral while shifter was in park. And yes, it did feel like it was shifting normal, no hang ups.

Hi Anita,

No problem with timing. LOL If there isn't a CV joint broken or damaged in some way, then we have to expect something internal in the transmission. If possible, I need you to confirm if it moves in park. Do this on a hill where there will be pressure on the system so that if there is an issue, you'll be able to tell.

Let me know.

Hello, and thank you for your response. So, should I have my car started or not, to see if the car moves while in park? Probably a dumb question.

Hi,

No question is a dumb question. In this case, it doesn't matter if it is running or not. We just need to determine if the vehicle will move in park when it has pressure trying to move it.

Let me know.

Okay, finally. Well, no, the car does not roll in park. Started it up last night and it wouldn't drive in reverse. And barely got it to move in drive. It shifted smoothly on the shifter handle. And the check engine light is not on.

Also, I couldn't check that on a hill for the pressure to see if it would roll in park. Had no choice but to do it where it was parked.

Hi Anita, are you still hearing the clunking noise when you try to move the vehicle? Does the speedometer move when you try?

Let me know.

I first want to say that I do greatly appreciate you. So, I did here a not as loud clunking noise when I moved the shifter to reverse. And was moving the shifter to each position and it finally went in drive. And I'm not sure about the speedometer. I think it was but will double check on that in the morning and get back to you.

Hi,

Sounds good. When you check it, place it in drive and even though the vehicle won't move, see if the speedometer indicates a speed.

Let me know.
