will the mass air flow sensor cause my car to run rich?

Yes.
If malfunctioning, PCM will set it to a default setting, which is always rich to protect engine from a lean condition which can burn a piston in no time.
MAF should set an error code. Have car scanned at some autoparts stores for free.
