I am a new member and I now this might be an interesting topic for many Corolla owners. I have 2001 Corolla S with famous knocking in the valve trane area. I found a 1999 low mileage engine that I am planning on putting in. So far I ran into a small problem. I can transfer: Throtle body, Injector and Spark coils. The only problem I've seen is the Camshaft Position Sensor.
The location of the sensor is on the left on 2001 instead on the right side of the cylinder head in 1999 model. Theay are both the same 1ZZFE engine. I can extend the wires from one side to another, but I am not sure are the signals sent will be the same and are they gonna be at the same postioin of the Cam?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

The noise is it similar to dropping a bunch of marbles in an empty tin can-If so inspect and test the knock sensor might not be retarding the ignition timing causing the engine to pingi/detonate.

No, the engine is shot.

Can I swap it with 1999 1zzfe engine?

The only thing I can't figure out is. Will it work with an old Camshaft sensor that is still on cylinder head?

Give it a shot with the extension wires and see whether it will pop a CMH sensor code

Its the same CMH sensor by P/N 5S1250 with Airtex
