1993 Toyota Camry LE. The car cranks and runs just fine usually but after about 10 minutes or so (after it warms up) it goes dead and won't crank back up until it cools down. I have replaced fuel pump, fuel filter, EGR valve, map sensor, Throttle position sensor, Auto air control sensor, every sensor possible, I have ran and checked every vacuum line for leaks.

Next thing I was looking into was the coil but it seems to be built in the distributor. Not sure on how to check if its getting to hot and shutting off. It warms up and starts slugging rpms up and down almost dead with check engine light on and finally dies on me and doesn't start back up until about 10 mins and starts again and repeats itself. What could be the problem? Im at a loss here spent over $800 on new parts and isnt fixed still.

For the 800 you could taken it somewhere and had it fixed. If the check engine light is coming on while its running then you need to see what codes you have. Let me know the exact code numbers you have not code descriptions.

Well in my area the part stores only have the diagnose for 1996 and up. Since mines 1993 cannot do it unless I have one that they can get for me which is hundreds of dollars, it only comes on when engine gets warm but on and off then dies. But im trying to get one from a friend that will work for the year and model car. But no way other than that to get the code. Then I can take the code to the store and have em look it up. Im so aggravated on this car!

I always work on my own stuff no matter wat. I just replaced a motor in my truck. No problems at all. Run like a top. I am very touchy on others messing with my cars. I belive the toyota problem could be in distributor. I mean what else could it be. I have spray vacumms and nothing there to cause problems. Its been 2 moonths trying to figure it out. I had replaced the whole dog house on it due from a wreck but this problem was going on befor that. But it looks like its never been wrecked now after I replaced the dog house. But still same problem

My car starts fine when cold, but after it warms it stalls when stopping at light or sign! After it stalls it smells like rotton eggs when trying to resart and I sometimes have to wait 15 minutes before restarting and then when it does start it has brown smoke coming out of exhuast until it clears up then runs rough! Car seems to run fine as long as you don't stop! I had disconnected EGR valve and thought it was Idle control valve. What else could this be! If I let it sit for a couple of days, it runs finefor a day or so then problem starts all over again! Please help!

Hi vwmike72,

Is the Check engine light showing?

I suspect the catalytic converter to be clogged.

No, check engine light is not on and I have no trouble maintaining RPM's on highway or just driving around. The problem only exists when coming to a stop! I'm totally stumped! When car sits for a few days, the problem doesn't occur right away, it may take a couple of days but when it does happen, it happens quite frequently! Any other suggestions!

Hi vwmike72,

You mentioned waiting 15 minutes before starting. Do you mean to say the engine could not be started within the 15 mins?

The brown (black?) Smoke and bad smell should be due to excessive unburnt gas getting past the catalytic converter.

I guess you need to check for electrical faults. When engine stalls and could not start, check for sparks at plugs. The coil might not be working. Check for loose/bad socket connectors.

Check for power supply to distributor.

When this problem occurs it usually will just turn over but not start for 10-15 mins! I have to check everything electrical when it malfunctions correct? Why would the engine light not go on when this happens? Any particular sensors I can check? Thanks alot for your help!

My 1993 Camry often shakes violently and sometimes completely loses power when idling at a stop light. The engine will rev up and down erratically. Some days it does this and some days it does not.

When I had a similar situation several months ago, my mechanic cleaned out the fuel line and replaced a distributer wire and a spark plug or two. That seemed to clear it up. Now that I have moved across the country it is doing it again but worse and more regularly. I have confused as to whether this might be a fuel problem (I use mid-grade gas) or an electrical problem. Or something else.

When was it last tuned-up and does it have a check engine light?

Start by checking the fuel pressure, idle air control valve, throttle position and mass airflow sensors

Hi vwmike72,

If the cause is not from any sensors or signals for the PCM, the Check Light would not show.

Items at fault that does not show on the CEL.
1. Ignition coil.
2. Ignition switch. (Power supply interruption).
3. Fuel pump or relay.
4. Distributor cap, rotor, cables and spark plugs.

I would suspect it to be an electrical fault so that is where you should start when it occurs.

It hasn't been tuned since i've owned it (five years). There is no check engine light. The last time the mechanic ran the diagnostics about two months ago he said that nothing was showing up. Would any of these things I should have checked show up on such a scan?

Lets get give it major tune-up and see what happens-don't work comeback and I'll deal with it-

Pulling the code/s find the diagnostic connector in the engine compartment and jump termial Te-1 to E-1 with a jumper and read off the flashes then give me the code/s

Get the items checked that I've mentioned and get back
