1988 Toyota Camry 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

My car vibrate seriously idle and engage in gear. It also change gear violently. I also notes that when on motion, if slow down the gear will not shift, I have to press Over drive button. Please can the problem be with engine or tranmission?

First check the motor mounts, if OK, then check the detent or kickdown cable.

It attaches to throttle body cam and controls hydraulic pressure in trans. If out of adjustment it will cause too much or too little hydraulic pressure in trans.
Too much pressure will cause sysmpoms you describe, too little will cause long shift points and slipping.
