Noises problem
1997 Toyota Camry 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

my car recently developed a hollow tunnel sounding noise. It is located near the front of the car but not in the engine area. I looked at the tail pipe and can't see any holes. It makes the sound when you step on the gas and continues as you are driving. It is loudest when you step on the gas.

Hi j boyle,

If there is no exhaust leakage, I would suspect the catalytic converter to be the problem. The internals are faulty and when this happens accelaration would cause a hollow noise.

To test for leakages, use a pice of rag to stop the end pipe with engine running and listen for hissing noise from the exhaust.
