TAPPING NOISE UNDER HOOD OCCURS IN THE MORNING WHEN ENGINE IS COLD. I START THE ENGINE AFTER IT REVS REAL HIGH. I PUT INTO REVERSE AND GET THE TAPPING NOISE. IT DOSEN'T HAPPEN ALL THE TIME. IT SEEMS TO BE TRANSMISSION SHIFTER RELATED. IT WILL STOP FEW A FEW SECONDS AFTER SHIFTING. BUT AFTER LESS THAN A HUNDRED FEET STOP MAKING NOISE.

I don't want to state the obvious, but it should be under warranty, have Toyota repair it (you may need to leave it overnight).

Reason I say that is you want to document the problem, even if Toyota calls it "normal".
If they say there is no problem, keep reciept in glove box and if problem gets worse (after warranty is expired) you will have documentation proving that problem occured while truck was under warranty.

I also have a 2007 4Runner with 21000 miles. It makes the same tapping noise at start up and seems to disappear after a few minutes or upon shifting. Sounds like a pattern. I would llike to know if you found out anything from Toyota - what the problem is or whether any other owners have the same problems.

There is also a EVAP switching valve on the intake near the MAF sensor. It will, in some cases, make a tapping noise like a lifter, but mostly at idle.
