Purchased the vehicle listed above with missing front drive shaft.
Installed replacement front drive shaft to find out why they removed and repair underlying problem.
Getting "winding" sound and bang bang bang bang if the wheel is turned past a
certain point while driving.
Transfer case or front axle?

Thank you

Most likely in the front axle as turning the wheel changes the sounds.

Hi,

Sounds like you may have a broke engine or transmission mount, The axle shouldn't give a banging noise. Now that you have the front drive shaft back in your vehicle, It is putting more stress on the mounts and if you have a broken mount this can throw your drive-line out specs causing engine or transmission to bang. I'm attaching engine mount location.
Also check the suspension height and struts, springs, and shocks for this can also cause drive-line problems. I have also seen body mounts make a banging noise when making turns over rough terrain.
Let us know what you found so we can help others.

Thank you,
Joe Terwilliger
