Tranny wasnt shifting from 1st to 2nd the car was cold and I misread the dipstick and thinking it was low I added a half a quart of an all purpose tranny fluid , then the car started not shifting into drive untill I shut it of and restarted the engine then discovered was low on fluid so the excess fluid was removed there is a whining sound coming from the front pump however sometimes it will shift and it can be driven but not always. Note : when it will shift and has been driven through out the day it runs fine and the whining sound goes away
but the next day we may not be able to get it even to go from park to drive its doesnt want to engage. Help!

Have you changed the oil/filter in the trans? A clogged filter will make the noise

Yes filter has been changed , I forgot to mention in the original post that when the car was shut off and restarted and I proceeded to drive the engine would rev slightly higher when it shifted to the next gear

Then most likely there is an internal failure in the transmission. It will have to be removed and inspected
