8 inch of clutch play, have to rev really high to engage

Hi thanks,
I have a saturn 4 door with the 1.9 litre engine.
The engine was knocking horribly and the coolant was half oil.I'm not worried about that, I'm just wondering why my clutch wouldnt engage (turn transmission with engine) until the last inch or so of clutch pedal release? The clutch was bad(real bad!) When I pulled the engine and tranny, I'm just worried theres a bigger problem.

The clutch is the least of you worries. Look at it when the car is apart. You have a severe problem with water in your oil.

Yeah I know.I already have a new engine ready, I'm just worried about transmission issues. It doesnt sound like a master/slave cylinder issue or clutch issue(even though the slipping was caused by this ofcourse) but I hope I'm wrong. Thanks though!
