These style brakes are a bit tricky. I attached the process for your review and let us know if you have questions. Thanks

How do you adjust the clearance between snap ring and hub?

If you look at the diagram at number 3 it is the snap ring and shim. You should not need to adjust the clearance because unless parts are worn they should fit with the stock shim. However, you need to check what is called preload and I attached the process. There are additional shims available. They are on the last page.

Yeah, everything is worn on this one. It hasn’t been looked at for a long time and that picture of the bolt and tool used that’s what I’m trying to figure out how to do. Because the picture is hard to tell for me and I appreciate your help through this I know it’s aggravating but I thank you.

Once you set the pre load they are showing a dial indicator to check the clearance between the hub body and snap ring. If it is too tight then it could wear the components out. If it is too loose then it could make noise.

If you don't have a dial indicator then I would install the shim and snap ring and just make sure they are almost touching if not just barely touching. As you can see the clearance is 0mm-.3mm.

If you think it is too loose then get a larger shim and try it. Basically it is a trial and error situation so you just need to find what fits the best.
