Message center shows power steering message. But when I cycle through the information trips A&B, MPG and fuel range all show dashes. Odometer shows "error" and the speedometer does not work. Would like to know if there's anything I need to replace before trying to find the $600.00+ for a new EPS module?

You may still be covered under a special coverage. Here is the recall letter:

Collision

29

2006 Chevrolet Malibu

L4-2.2L VIN F

Recall - Loss of Electric Power Steering Assist

Vehicle Steering and Suspension Technical Service Bulletins Recall - Loss of Electric Power Steering Assist

RECALL - LOSS OF ELECTRIC POWER STEERING ASSIST

# 14772: Product Safety Electric Power Steering Assist (Feb 5, 2015)

Subject: 14772 - Electric Power Steering Assist Models: 2006-2007 Chevrolet Malibu, Malibu Maxx 2006-2007 Pontiac G6 Equipped with Electric Power Steering

Condition

General Motors has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2006 and 2007 model year Chevrolet Malibu, Malibu Maxx, and Pontiac G6 vehicles, equipped with Electronic Power Steering (EPS). These vehicles may experience a sudden loss of power steering assist that could occur at any time while driving. If the power steering assist is lost, a message is displayed on the Driver Information Center and a chime sounds to inform the driver. Steering control can be maintained, as the vehicle will revert to a manual steering mode, but would require greater driver effort at low vehicle speeds, which could result in an increased risk of a crash.

Correction

Dealers are to replace the torque sensor assembly. If the vehicle has had a steering column replacement during the August 2008 to present time frame, the column contains the new torque sensor assembly and no repair is necessary.

Vehicles Involved

All involved vehicles are identified by Vehicle Identification Number on the Investigate Vehicle History screen in GM Global Warranty Management system. Dealership service personnel should always check this site to confirm vehicle involvement prior to beginning any required inspections and/or repairs. It is important to routinely use this tool to verify eligibility because not all similar vehicles may be involved regardless of description or option content.

For dealers with involved vehicles, a listing with involved vehicles containing the complete vehicle identification number, customer name, and address information has been prepared and will be provided to US and Canadian dealers through the GM GlobalConnect Recall Reports, or sent directly to export dealers. Dealers will not have a report available if they have no involved vehicles currently assigned.

The listing may contain customer names and addresses obtained from Motor Vehicle Registration Records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any purpose other than follow-up necessary to complete this recall is a violation of law in several states/provinces/countries. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this report to the follow-up necessary to complete this recall.

Hope your still covered and let us know if the information helped. You would need to call the dealerahip and provide your VIN# to verify you are still covered.

Called the dealership. They told me my vehicle was not part of the recall. Spoke with a mechanic at the dealership and was told I could replace the EPS but that wouldn't guarantee it would be fixed. Told me there was no reason that the speedometer would stop working as well as all the info in the message center showing dashes the odometer saying error and the EPS to stop working all at the same time. Told me I would need to come in for a $110.00 diagnostic. Trying to find other causes for all of that to happen at once but haven't been able to find anything. I am a single father with 2 kids. I need to try and exhaust all other cheaper possible options for the faults before trying to replace a $600.00+ part. I can provide a video if needed.

Update. Pulled the fuse and tested. Fuse is fine. Disconnected the battery and let everything reset. Seemed to be fine. Speedometer still didn't work but Got about a block down the street and everything went out again.

Then your next step would be is to have the whole system scanned for codes. A more advance scan tool will be needed to scan through all the control units. Call several local parts stores to see if they have a scan tool that can read the EPS module. The fault code would at least give us a starting point to start looking for a fault.

Have a friend of the family coming over tomorrow with his scan tool. Will know more then. And thanks for the help. Decent with car repairs but when it comes to electrical I don't mess with it much especially on newer vehicles.

Hello,

What happens on these is the steering motor goes out. Here is how to replace it. It might fix the speedometer as well. Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is.

He came over today and did a quick diagnostic. Throwing a speed sensor fault. Along with a couple others. He went ahead and reset everything. Which fixed the power steering as well as the dashes in the message center. Speedometer still doesn't work. So I am going to replace the speed sensor and see where it all stands.
