I recently aquired a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2L which will start (sputters), but smokes (white) really bad, lacks power and/or dies when you step on the gas. The old owner had work done on it - new fuel pump, cleaned injectors, cleaned gas tank and new cat. converter. Before I get started I'd like a word from the pros, I'm thinking head gasket or timing? Any suggestions?

i would have to say head gasket, check and make sure the oil is the color it's supposed to be.

Yup sounds like head gasket to me. Check all around the head especially the two front corners for dampness that might indicate leaking coolant.
I have 270,000km on mine and just replaced the head gasket. Apparently it is common with these engines sooner.
