1998 Pontiac Sunfire 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic? Miles

On my dashboard where the mileage should show up the LED(?) Doesn't display anything. Is it a bulb or a screen that I have to replace or something different?

I am showing in GM service info that it is a stepper motor odometer. Is that correct, or is it a digital type display? Does it have any backlighting, light when the headlamps are on.

From what I remember (since right now there is no lights now) the numbers looked digital, like on a microwave. I think there was a backlight too it, very faint though. I vauguely rememeber it going "brighter" when I turned my lights on.

Right now it is just a black square.
Thanks!

The service information from GM, and ALLDATA does not say specifically that there are bulbs for the odometer. Ther are 8 bulbs that are serviceable in the rear of the cluster, and one of these may provide backlighting to the odometer LCD. It would be a trial and error procedure at this point. If you shine a light at the LCD(odometer), can you make out the numbers? If that is the case, it may be just backlighting.
