Engine Performance problem
2000 Pontiac Grand Prix 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I have a 2000 Grand Prix GTP with roughly 175K miles on it. For the last 2 years I have noticed that the car will shift fine in gears 1-3 but shifts hard in 4th gear and sometimes on the highway does not want to downshift. When accelerating it also doesn't seem to want to. The car will sputter as if it is trying to accelerating but sounds as if it is cutting in and out and the check engine light will also come on and flash but then turns off. I have had this code checked before and it reads an engine misfire but nothing about the transmission. Car has recently been serviced for some major issues due to coolant and oil leaks but has never had a complete tune up since purchase. What could be my problem?

I would certainly do a major tune up, plugs, wires, fuel/air filter, see if problem persists.

If it continues, check fuel presure with mechanical gauge first, but the tune up should have a dramatic effect.
