I am getting a P0502 VSS low voltage code when the speedometer works most of the time and the odometer rarely works. What can be the cause? Isn’t the odometer and speedometer values calculated by the output of the VSS? Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot the faulty odometer when the speedometer is working with a VSS P0502 code? Speedometer works most of the time but does drop out once in a while.

Welcome to 2CarPros.

When the ECM detects a very low vehicle speed, while the vehicle is in motion, DTC P0502 sets. With that in mind, there is a diagnostic flow chart that one needs to work through to identify the cause of the problem. I have attached them below. If there is something you can't read, let me know.

Here are a few links that will help you complete the diagnostic tests:

As far as the odometer, if it isn't working, the instrument cluster most likely needs replaced. If you look at picture 4, it contains the diagnostic flow chart for a faulty odometer.

I hope something here helps. Let me know if you have other questions or need anything.

Take care,
Joe
