Steering problem
1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 204K miles

We're replacing the inner and outer tie rods. The boot on the inner tie rod has what appears to be a plastic post that extends under a heat shield. We can't see where it goes or how it's connected, but it won't allow us to remove the boot. How do we disconnect it and remove the boot?

These instructions come from a firebird, but may be applicable.
1. Remove wheel 2. Loosen the tie-rod and locknut and mark the position of the tie-rod end on the threaded portion of the tie-rod 3. Remove the cotter pin and loosen the castle nut from the tie-rod end balljoint stud, the install a small puller and seperate the tie-rod end from the steering knuckle. Remove the tie-rod end from the steering knuckle arm ( DO NOT USE A PICKLE FORK UNLESS YOU PLAN TO REPLACE THE TIE-ROF END, A PICKLE FORK WILL DAMAGE THE BOOT) 4. Unscrew the old tie-rod and install the new one, make sure the new one is lined up with the marks you made on the threads. 5. Installation is reverse of removal, tighten the tie-rod end balljoint to correct torue
