The shifter will not engage in any gear. It moves freely. I can push the shift lock button on the left side of the steering column and the transmission will engage temporarily but then the problem recurs. Is this a mechanical problem or a problem with the shift lock mechanism? Thanks

This sounds like a mechanical issue that could be related to the fluid level or condition.

I am not sure why it would engage temporarily but that doesn't change the steps we need to take.

Here is a guide that will help with checking the fluid and filling it if needed:

However, if the fluid is not in good condition, then we need to change it so let's follow this guide to get that done:

Lastly, we need to check for codes and find out what is there.

If we have sensor issue, then we should have some codes and this guide will help pull codes:

Please run through this info and let me know what questions you have.

Thanks
