I have been told that my CV joints, wheel barrings, tire rod, and struts all need to be replaced. I have a friend that says he can fix all this but he is worried about haveing to drain the transmission fluid because it has never been changed before. Him fixing my car will save me about $400.00. Should he be worried about draining the transmission fluid?

If it hasn't been replaced in 170,000 miles then yes it definitely needs some fresh fluid in it, otherwise you risk lack of lubrication (old fluid thins out and doesn't lube as good even with if full) and damaging it, very costly compared to a lube job.
