Sentra automatic transmission problem

1997 Nissan Sentra, 136k miles, 1.6 liter.

Went in with what I thought was a transmission problem, also check engine light was going on, which they pulled code for- PO505 Idle control valve. Mechanic checked fluid and test drove car and said transmission was fine, but it only occurred to me afterwards that he'd only gone around the block and problem only occurs in high gear, at about 40-45 mph.

It'll rev high and lurch into gear at these speeds, no problem at all in lower gear, and it'll go into gear fine if I downshift into 2. Doesn't happen every time, and it seems to help if I ease off the accelerator a bit before accelerating.

Mechanic also told me I could hold off on fixing valve as long as it was driving OK, which it obviously isn't, though by the time I realized it the place was closed.

Can the bad valve cause this behavior or can it be something else? At the high mileage if I have to rebuild the transmission PLUS the control valve (plus I also have a bad AC compressor) not sure the car's worth putting 2K into. Help!

Could be shifting solenoid/s

Have these sensors check; Coolant temperature, Throttle positioning, and Vehicle speed sensors. Before you blame the tranny as the problem.
