I started the car and the rpms bounced between 500-1000. Then the car died when I shifted into Drive. I drove it to the shop today and I thought I was going to have to push it, it seemed to have died but the engine was still running and it was crawling along. They ran some diagonostic that came back with 6 codes and their best bet is the mass airflow sensor.

I replaced that myself several years ago, but when it went out last time I could still drive normally with one foot on the brake and the other on the gas to keep the rpms up. That doesn't work this time.

Without knowing all of the codes, it would be hard to tell what is wrong, especially with that many of them.A MAF can do what you describe, but if it was replaced a few years ago it shouldnt be bad already. Check for vacuum leaks between the MAF and the engine or anywhere on the engine, this will lean out the mixture and cause it to run poorly. Will the engine rev up in park?

You can also use carb cleaner to carefully spray around the intake area, if it changes the idle you have sprayed a vacuum leak
