There is a whine sound coming from the rear of the engine compartment (2001 Nissan Frontier v6). It is present during idle and acceleration/deceleration. Does not seem to be coming from any of the auxiliary items (water pump, power steering pump, ac, alternator). Just had the alternator checked and it was working fine.

Any ideas?

Hi td6057,

Does the noise pitch or level changes with engagement of the gears while not moving?

The sound reduces slightly when placed into reverse, seemingly because the idle drops a little when placed into reverse. Park, drive, neutral, and the low gears all have the same sound when not moving, basically the same whine/whirling sound.

But the pitch of the whine does go up when idle goes up (accelerating), and then tones back down after letting up on the accelerator.

Hi td6057,

This noise should not be related to trans operations except for the torque convetrter.

I can't figure out what else could be causing this.

To find the source, try using a rubber hose as a stethoscope.
