Van started flashing “Transmission Problem” and “Emission Problem.” The check engine light lit up and “D” on the gear indicator started flashing.

Hi,

Because of the model year, I recommend having the can-bus scanned. CAN stands for controller area network. Basically, all the computers/modules are tied together via a few wires. This type of scan will identify codes regardless of the module storing them.

I'm suggesting this because the vehicle is somewhat newer. Also, the indicators are for different circuits. Hopefully, a scan will identify where the problem is coming from. If we don't do it, then it becomes a guessing game.

Here is a link that shows how the scan is to be performed:

Since the transmission may be involved, you may want to contact a dealer. The powertrain warranty is 5 years of 60,000 miles. I realize you are slightly over, but they may provide some assistance because of how close it is.

Let me know if you have questions or if you have other questions,

Take care,

Joe

Hey Joe,

I hooked up my code reader and there is a permanent P061B code. After some more googling, I found a forum where the newer models would have similar issues with a bad battery. My battery tested good. Another scenario people talked about was that after they went through a car wash, the car would flash those codes and maybe a few other codes. The difference was that their codes cleared after shutting the engine off. We didn’t go through a car wash, but the van did sit through a pretty heavy rain for most of the day yesterday. With that information, I cleared the codes then test drove the vehicle for about 5 miles including on the interstate. For those 5 miles, and the 15 miles my wife drove the car after I cleared the codes, it ran great. We’re suppose to get more rain tomorrow night. Hoping it’s a fluke, but not holding my breath.

Hi,

I just read through the code information. Based on what I read, it sounds like an intermittent issue. It may never come back. If it does, then it could actually be the transmission control module. However, I suspect it was related to the heavy rain. If it happens again, let me know. We can try disconnecting the TCM connectors, making sure they are dry, and reconnecting it using dielectric grease to prevent moisture from entering. Hopefully, that will take care of the issue.

Take care of yourself and let me know if things change.

Joe
