Noises problem
1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse Manual 100, 00 miles

There is a loud rattling that, it just started, and is coming from where the timing belt is encased. The belt still feels tight it doesn't give at all. Is this the timing belt? If not what else would make that rattle.

First --I'd stop driving it until I checked it out. There are other stuff there though (alternator. Compressor. )

But if you have determined that it is coming from the timing belt area -- there are pulleys in theire that help tension and align the belt. They spin at very high RPMS and I'm told thay typically wear out at 100K or so. When they do, they let the belt get crooked and then it starts wearing and tearing.

And you know what happens when the timing belt tears up.

A 1995 with only 100k -- sweet, those were great cars. Be sure and check your oil.

Had car for 15 years, with only minor problems. Now it is wound up and feels like its engine is going to blow up. I have to up shift at much lower speed and at 60mp hr shift into 5th gear, however once in 5th seems to run better. Also when car is idling its at 1rpm is this normal? Its loud and has somewhat of a shake. The mechanic that did job says has nothing to do with his work, but it was running fine before he changed timing belt? Unfortunately am disabled and my funds are very limited or I would love to donate :(

My feeling is that the valve timing is out, often this is the case if great care is not taken to check after replacing the belt, this should be checked first.

I recently had my timing belt change less than 15000 miles ago but it broke anyway, I was wondering if I bent the valves? Is there clearence, I was driving at about 50 miles an hour when it broke and I did try starting the car several times before I realized it was the belt, the car did run great before this problem, should I try changing the belt?

Hi there,

according to my information your engine is an interference type engine and valve damage had more than likely taken place, to prove this, replace the belt and don a compression test.

Is there an easy way to tell if the timing belt is broken or if the ecm has failed. My 90 eclipse is not running stopped suddenly while the engine was idle. People have told me it is either the timing belt or the ecm I am tring to sell this car but I would get more for it if it is running trying to decide if it is worth the investment or a couple hundred bucks or just sell it as is? Thanks for any advice offered! Jason.

Hi jason,

If the engine seems to turn faster than normal when trying to start, it most likely to be a broken timing belt.

Remove the oil filler cap and get someone to crank the engine. If the camshaft move while being cranked, the timing belt is working.
