Engine Performance problem
1998 Mazda RX7 Two Wheel Drive Manual 144000 miles

The car has been running great for months since I bought it, tonight I was getting off the highway, downshifted into 2nd and heard a strange noise. Immediately afterward I had no power what so ever. I could barely make it up a small hill in 1st gear. Also when pushing the gas pedal it takes forever for the rpms to climb and it won't idle. Ignition system problem or apex seal problem? Please help.

Thank you

Check engine light on? If so have it scanned to see what the PCM sees wrong. Try loosening the exhaust before the cat converter to see if the exhaust is plugged which will do exactly what you described

Still having the same issue wit the car so I did what you suggested, I separated the catalytic converter from the exhaust and then the car would not start at all. So I pulled the plugs and one of them has oil on it. To me this seems catastrophic. Am I correct in assuming that?

Once again thanks for your help.

Sounds like it may have lost a seal. That would qualify as catastrophic I guess

So then it seems a rebuild is in order? Can you recommend a good place to get a rebuild kit?
