Hi,
I have been helping a co worker fix his vehicle. It is a 99 Mazda Protege, 4 cylinder. He told me it had been stalling infrequently, and when it did, he could turn it over and over, but it would not start. After letting it sit for 30 minutes to an hour, it would then start and run again only to do it again after a couple of hrs or after a few days. It would happen just after a few blocks, or after a few hrs, but not everytime it was used. The check engine light did come on, but the code was erased after the battery went dead. I have gotten the egr code, and cleaned it our with all of the hoses attached to it. I have not been able to cause the car to die on me yet. Do you have any ideas?

That was mostlikely the problem, the dirty egr, but if it turns out that isnt the problem then I would take a look at the crank position sensor//hall effect sensor.

Did you find the problem. I have something similar.
I have a 1999 Mazda Protege.

My wife was driving it a few days ago in hot weather and it kept stalling on the interstate. She would have to wait about 1-2 minutes before it would start again.

I drove it to a shop about 10 miles away where I usually have it services. On the interstate I kept it around 2,600 RPMs and it didn't stall. When I got to the bottom of the off ramp it stalled when the RPM's dropped to around 1,100. I waited about 1 minute and it started again.

Between the off ramp and the shop (about 1 mile) it stalled 2-3 more times in traffic when the idle speed dropped to around 1,100 again. Each time after about 1 minute I could restart it.

When it stalled the dash lights would flicker and the speedometer would bounce around 80-90 MPH even though I was stopped. It kind of sounded like the starter was clicking maybe (not sure of this). The speedometer and dash lights wouldn't stop flickering until I turned the ignition off.

The mechanic can't duplicate it. I was thinking maybe the ignition coils are going.

That is a possibility, something electrical obviously, I tend to lean towards the crank position sensor. And or the fuel pump relay.
