I didn't see a wire in the middle of the cap. Only four plug wires. Attached is a picture of what my dist. cap looks like.

The coil Must plug into that cap somehow, or it's built in. Like a GM. Give me a picture of the inside of the cap please. My manual does not tell location, but does give high tension resistance values for it.I know you have one!Look for a flat 7 wire connector.

Your right there is a flat connector on top of the distributor, that has a wire harness connected to it. Is the coil inside the distributor?

Here's the strange thing. If you drive the car around town <50 mph, no problem. As soon as you go on the highway after about 15-30 minutes at highway speed, check engine light comes on, misfire #4. When I chaned engines I reused the intake manifold gasket. I have checked for leaks using carb cleaner but nothing showed up.

Why would you pay for an engine and then use old gaskets? That's asking for trouble. You cannot re-use intake manifold gasket!

I know dumb rookie mistake. I did the engine myself. Would that cause the misfire problem?

A vacuum leak due to the reuse of the gasket. Maybe under the manifold, where the spray can't reach. What does the vacuum gauge read? Should be 16-22 Hg, and steady!

Replaced the manifold gasket. Light stayed off for 24 hours then came back on. Still being triggered at highway speeds? Car runs great, idels at 750, timing is dead on.

I'm at a loss

If it's still a P0304 chang the plug, and if you can, move the wire to a different cylinder, see if the code changes, and test the injector at #4, buy a noid light plug it in and start the car. Is the light flashing, if yes injector may be ng, if no the harnes to the injector has a problem.

You are using an old cap? Did you check the spark intensity as compared to the others? Don't be penny wise and pound foolish.A tune up is ALL tune up parts!
