1994 Mazda Protege Repair Question

1994 Mazda Protege shift not working
Whils driving,noticed the stick was getting sloppy. When i went to shift,the stick was not doing anything. It was loose and not engaging. I could still drive in a gear,but, could not shift. The clutch still worked .Is it most likely a linkage issue?

Linkage, shifter or cable, hopefully not the trans. look under the hood while someone moves the shifter (can be done with car off) see if anything moves, if not work your way back to the shifter
