I have almost 200K miles on my car, a mechanic said I have a head gasket leak. It would cost about $1,800 to replace, but he didn't think it was worth it considering age and mileage of car. Also if you replace the gaskets, mainly taking care of the upper part of the engine, it may put stress on the lower engine. If it fails then I'm looking at getting an entire engine. Does this sound correct and do you thnk it's worth me getting it repaired? Otherwise, the car operates great.

Hello,

I don't see were it will cause any more stress on the lower engine, all you would be having done is replacing the head gasket and having the heads checked for worpage and cracks. The only other thing I would suggest is, if you have the work done, would be to have the timing components replaced along with the water pump.

I have done many head gaskets on vehicles with over 200k on them and they are still going strong exept for your normal service and repairs.

Four of which were done about 2 - 3 years ago.

I would also call around and get a few more estimates. And make sure they include replacing timing components and water pump. Most places will check the heads for defects but you can ask about that also.

Then you will need to decide if it would be worth it.

Question: how bad is the leak? If it is just a small leak and you not sure about the repair go to your local auto part store and ask about a head gasket sealer that you just add to your coolant. That would be a quick temp fix till you decide.
