This mazda has been burning oil- goes down 1 quart every 300-350 miles. It puts white smoke out the tailpipe that stinks on start up but thats the only time.
It doesn't appear to be leaking oil, I've never seen any puddles under the car.
It has a loud noise when driving - it sounds like you're riding in a 2-man airplane. It does not change with acceleration neccessarily but does get louder with increased speed and softer with decreased speed.
Not sure if the two are related.
I has recently been running rough when sitting at stop light and when in park. I thought it might be the fuel filter, but my husband pulled it off and it was fine. They were messing with the mass air flow sensor today and when they had it detached, it was running similar to the way it has. The engine light however, has never come on.
The smoking and oil consumption has been going on for about 10 mo and the rough idle has been getting worse since 1 mo. The loud noise has been getting louder for about 8 mo. It has driven smoothly this whole time until this idle thing started 1 mo ago.
I have heard that white smoke possibly means cracked head and that the airplane noise could possibly be wheel bearings.
any ideas?

Ok first off the oil that is a lot of oil it is either leaking or burning it. Either way is bad. So is there a lot of oil under the car? If not then it is burning the oil so pull the spark plugs and see which on is covered in oil.
As for the noise I must only assume that it is coming from the exhaust. I have never heard a wheel bearing make the kind of noise you are discribing. So is the airplane noise there when the car is not moving? Rev the engine a bit and listen closely and let me know.
As for white smoke on start up this could be normal depending on the outside temp where you live at the time. Also has the air cleaner been check to see if there is any oil in it? Get back to me and let me know what you can.

My husband pulled the spark plugs and one of them had oil- it was either #2 or #3. (The 2nd one behind the oil cap.)
Air cleaner is clean.
The noise is only when driving. I did not hear it when reving the engine.

Well can't say this is going to help you much but, Im pretty much having the same problem with my wife's mazda 626. I saw the oil on the spark plug so I changed the valve cover gasket which takes a short time. Well it's still smokig which leads me to believe through research that there may be a cracked or broken valve stem or theres something wrong with the piston rings. Try changing the valve cover gasket first.
