1998 Mazda 626 oil burning engine


engine burns oil when cold , stops burning when hot, will new piston rings cure problem ...???thanks

Maybe, but you need to make sure it's the rings and not something else before you start tearing off the head, etc.

With your engine cold, pull out a spark plug and do a compression check. Then, squirt some oil in the cylinder and redo the check. If your compression goes up significantly, there is a good chance that you have worn rings.

If it is the rings, maybe you could try throwing in a can of motor honey etc. This IS NOT a fix but might get your car to go a bit further before you have to tear into it.
