Smells problem V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic 5000 miles

Hi this coming weekend I will be replacing a fuel pump on a 1991 lincoln town car and was wondering what tools I needed to do so plus where is the best deal to purchase one is it always the fuel pump or how do you tell if the relays are bad or the fuel filter is just clogged. No I do not hear it turn on plus what parts would I need for the replacement of the pump.

You can test the relay under the hood by switching another relay from another device. The fuel relay is one of three on the drivers side over the wheel well and behind the black square box and in front of the power brake booster. Or you can see if you are getting power by using a multi tester while the ignition is on. Third the fuse is in the fuse box on the passenger side next to the battery. It is yellow 20 Amp. As for the fuel filter it is under the drivers side rear door on the frame rail. Remove it with a 7/16 wrench and use the fuel line disconnect tool. Once removed, you can drain the fuel and put a paper towel over the inlet and blow. If it is obstructed you will not be able to blow much air through it, if it blows easily it is clean enough for fuel to flow. Generally this is clogged and the fuel pump and relay/fuses are okay and will correct your problem. Another way to test is to put a fuel pressure gauge on the test port (looks like a tire valve) on the top of the engine rear passenger side by the throttle linkage on the fuel rail.
