The car has been sitting for many months, the battery was not holding a charge , so it was replaced with a new one. After it was installed the engine would not turn over the starter just made a clicking sound and the battery power lines got hot. Could the starter be shorting out? If not what is your suggestion?

First of all thank you so much for your donation. The first thing i would check is make sure your battery cable's are clean and tight. Then i would take a multimeter and make sure you have battery voltage to the white wire to the starter. Also check the black and white on the starter when the key is in the start position it should have battery voltage as well.If all that is good then i would have the starter tested. But before you have the starter tested make sure the engine turn's over freely by hand.
