1988 honda prelude wont start sometimes

88 honda prelude SI duel cams 2.0 L. replaced fuel pump and cap and rotor, spark plugs. check engine light comes on when I turn key to start. if it goes off it will start and run fine, if it doesnt go off then it wont start and I think the fuel pump wont turn on when the light stays on. but when the light goes off I can hear it running and it starts fine and runs good.
