1998 Honda Civic LX 125,000. For about 2,000 miles an irregular rattling can be heard from the engine. It is pretty bad when starting the car, settles down while idling, but gets bad again when accelerating. The problem seems to be limiting the rate of acceleration...the car doesn't have the power it once had.

The rattle and the power loss could be entirely separate issues. Please look at the exhaust system very closely and check the heat shields that are connected to the exhaust system. There are a few of them. They sometimes get loose and rattle. Then you can answer whether or not the car has been overheating or has overheated.
