Different dealers and mechanics are giving me different info regarding what else needs to be done when replacing the timing belt on a 2001 CIvic EX. Some want to inspect the water pump and the cam and crank seals and some want to replace everything. What's the best choice?

The mileage your at is a factor, the engine style is also a factor. If the seals aren't leaking, I wouldn't touch them. If the pump is original and this is an interference engine, it would be a good idea to replace it. Somtimes there are tensioners or guides that may also be a good idea. On this particular car, I might PM Bruce Hunt and get his opinion as he sees more of these than I do.

It's a crap shoot not replacing somthing that is questionable in the event it goes 6 months down the road and trashes the engine or causes you labor that you could heve saved when you did the belt.

Timing belts, water pump and tensioner are the smart way to go. Get in and stay out is the best method of car repair. Make sure you go to a mechanic you trust. Servicewriter is correct on the seals, I wouldn't touch them unless they show signs of leaking. That is why I would pick a trustworthy mechanic. They can tell you they want to replace them and not but you will not know. There are scammers out there and there are good honest mechanics.
