Honda Accord 1993, 187,000 miles, 16 valve engine

My 1993 Honda Accord will register overheating unless I turn the heater on full blast. This has been my temporary solution but it quickly becomes uncomfortable inside and am not convinced that it is good for the engine either. Seems to have adequate cooling fluid and the fan seems to work fine.
What can I check next?

Start with what everyone attacks first and that is the thermostat. Not very expensive, easy to replace and the cause of many heating issues.
