My 1998 Honda Accord, 176,000 miles, suddenly started making a clunking, bumping sound. It sounded like it was coming from the passenger side of the car. It would make the sound when I would drive over bumps in the road. I could hear it very well when I tuned into my driveway. (It is not the CV joints, I know what that sounds like.) I took it in and the mechanic said that my rack and pinion was bad, the bushings were worn out. I paid $693.84 (with tax) to have the rack and pinion replaced. It is still making the same noise. I took it back and now the mechanic says that the sway bar holders (I do not know the correct terminology) are bad. He described them as 4 inch screw-like things that can be found on both sides of my car and Iit would cost me another $140 to replace them.
What I need to know is shouldn't they have considered the sway bar option when they first looked at the car. According to the mechanic, he did not hear any noises when he test drove my car. He says he had to look really hard to find the sway bar holders as the problem.

How connected are the two, the rack and pinion and the sway bars?

Should they have seen the bad sway bar holders when they looked under the car?

Do they really cost that much and do I have to repair both of them?

Could there be any other reason my car is making the clunking noise when I drinve over humps and bumps?

Thank you and I apologize for being so long winded.

Hi there.

The items you refer to are called link pins, and often you can just replace the bushes as the pins are OK. This is part of the front suspension and quite independent of the steering. One would hope that any mechanic would diagnose these problems correctly, any noise from the front end on turning or driving on uneven surfaces would indicate a fault in the suspension ( as a first point of concern) there well may of been a problem with the rack, but I feel that is is a case of mis diagnosis and you have reason to complain to the person who did the job.
