So I have a weird issue with the hazard lights (4-way flashers) on this car. The turn signals work fine, but if I engage the hazard lights with the knob on the steering column, nothing happens. The turns signals no longer work but neither do the hazard lights. If I turn off the hazard switch, the turn signals again work fine.

I did replace the two pronged round relay switch above the ashtray in the dash, and the fuse labeled hazard/brake also looks brand new. What else could be causing the hazard lights to not function at all?

Good morning,

It was normal for the turn signal to not work when the hazard was applied.

I attached a wiring diagram for you. Check the fuse for the hazards with a voltmeter and verify power on both sides.

The flasher is attached as well. I posted a picture below.

Where is the first diagram located on the car? I thought the flasher relay was above the ashtray in the dash, that’s the one I replaced (but it didn’t make a difference).

Sorry it took me so long to respond. I finally took the dash apart to replace the radio and I can’t for the life of me find what’s in diagram 1. All I see if one flasher relay and it’s hanging on wires, not in a block like the picture. If I turn the turn signals on, that relay clicks so it must be for the signals. Where else could the flasher relay be?

Look on the fuse block itself. Sometimes they put them on the back of the fuse block as well.

I had to get down with a mirror to see the back of the fuse block but I don’t see anywhere where a relay should go, just a bunch of wires going to the fuses.

It is not a relay. It is a round can with 2 prongs on the end.

Yeah, I found one like it above the ashtray that was dangling on wires, but it appears to just be for the turn signals as it clicks when they are engaged. I can’t find a second one for the hazard lights.

I found this one on one of the forums.

First, you remove the fuse cover under the dash on the driver's side. Then read up and behind the fuse block and you will find it dangling on its' plug. You should be able to pull it around the fuse block out where you can easily remove the flasher and replace it with a new one.

That’s actually the one I replaced initially and then found out it was the turn signal. Do you think they use the same flasher and something else is wrong?

It is not by the ashtray. It is on the left side of the dash.

There is only one fuse box that I see, it’s in the middle underside of the dash behind the ashtray. Unless this car has a hidden secondary fuse box, I know some do.

Look on the driver's side around the steering column. GM loved to hide them in all kinds of places.

I finally found it! It's behind the headlight knob, there is a module with the horn relay and seat belt buzzer.

And guess what? The hazard flasher was missing! As soon as I popped one in there they worked! Not sure why the previous owner removed it, hopefully it wasn't some wiring or fuse issue.
