What does 4WD service means

My diag. Code is 4wd service. What does that mean is wrong. Or what can I check. Just looking for some ideas on what might be wrong.

It's probably the 4WD console switch on the dash that needs replacing, I had the same problem with a 2000 Z71, replaced the switch console and haven't had a problem, yet. There is no code for service 4WD on my 2000 GMC. Maybe there is one for the newer models.

Check the level of gear lube in the transfer case. Sensor may be telling you its low :)
