Transmission slippage or no?

I noticed today that (especially when driving higher speeds and on the freeway) that my car seems to miss. It's really strange and I don't know if it is tranny slippage or not.

When I accellerate gradually, I have no problems and it's smooth. But when I put the car in overdrive or I accellerate faster, the car shakes and feels like it's missing or grabbing. Yet, when I accellerate gradually, this problem does not happen. It usually starts (or perhaps becomes noticable) around 55 miles an hour and 65 miles an hour.

It's NOT like I can't switch gears though, like I said, when I gradually or smoothly accellerate all things are fine, I only really notice it when I'm in overdrive or GOING UP HILLS.

any ideas? God Bless

What kind of car? It sounds like a Ford overdrive problem as they do shudder and it seems like an engine misfire when they are ready to come apart; expensive repair--Let me know

I apologize, it is a pontiac Grand Am. 1996.

Like I said, when I accellerate gradually the car has no problem and runs smooth. But when I'm going up hill and I have to press the gas more, or when I'm on the freeway and I put the car in overdrive it feels like it grabs or misses. This happens around 55 miles and 65 an hour and up.

God Bless

What engine do you have and how many miles?

Pull the tranny dip stick while hot and smell the oil.

If it smells burnt and is a very dark brown then all probabliity it is the tranny

Before I would blame the tranny I probably would change the plugs.

Engine is 3.1 and has 186,000 miles on it.

So you think it could be the spark plugs then?

Thank you so much
