Hard start, code P1281

It is hard to start and this morning would run a minute and then chug a lot. It threw a code P1281.

Good morning,

This is a code for the engine running too cold.

the most common reason for this is the thermostat stuck open. I would start by replacing the thermostat.

Do this first as this effects fuel mapping and may take care of the issue with running.

SYMPTOM
P1281 - ENGINE IS COLD TOO LONG

TEST NOTE
This symptom is diagnosed using the test P0125 - CLOSED LOOP TEMPERATURE NOT REACHED.

WHEN MONITORED
The ignition key on, engine running.

SET CONDITION
The engine does not warm to 176 °F while driving for 20 minutes after start.

POSSIBLE CAUSES
- Low coolant level
- Thermostat
- ECT sensor (out of calibration/high resistance in related circuit)
