Recently I noticed that when I go over bumps, the front of my car makes a rattling noise. This only happens when go over bumps. When I took it to the dealer, they told me that my shocks are bad, and that I need to replace both of them at the same time at over 400.00 dollars for parts and labor. I have searched for some free literature on this and how hard it would be for me to change them. Is it hard for me to change them, do I need any special tools? If and when I do, is it a combo of shocks and shruts, or just hydrolic shocks?

Any particular year?

I expect you have struts all the way around. Check for Monroe Quick struts, It is the easiest and safest way for a d-i-y. They include the spring, strut and mount. Make sure that the spring isn't broke (recall) or the stabilizer links are not broken/loose.
