My 97 v6 3.0 taurus has been having alot of problems lately. I'm getting the tranny rebuilt right now, it needed an alternator, etc.
For the last month or so, when the car is started, it runs in park or neutral, but when I put it in reverse or drive, it dies. This happens 3 or 4 times before I can get it to run, and it will usually just die again before I can change the gear back from reverse to drive. As long as I don't stop, it doesn't die. Any ideas. Thanks.

well, it runs if i can just get it enough gas to power through the "dying" stage.
I'm giving it gas as I'm shifting from park to reverse. If I don't give it gas while shifting, it dies.
It doesn't try to die while the vehicle is actually moving. Just on the initial gear change. No lights.
It's in the shop for a transmission rebuild right now. Any chance that will take care of the dying problem?
