Our Tauras cannot drive over 30mph, won't shift to higher gears. Mechanic told us the trans needs replacing - will charge $1,700. Would it hurt the car to drive it, in this condition (for 10 miles), to get another estimate?

thanks,
JD

Sounds like your transmission isn't shifting out of first gear. I'd call several trans shops and ask each one what the fix would cost (trust me, they know) its most likely a minor problem with the valve body. Not requiring a full rebuild. Keep calling shops till you find one guy that will honestly tell you that it could just be the valve body. THAT is the guy you want to work on your transmission. Ask him how much to repair if its just that.
I'd say your transmission doesn't need a complete rebuild.

Btw - wouldn't drive it in low gear for 10 miles. Best to have it towed to the good guy.
