My car has been a series of problems since being run off the road in January 2006. The most recent in the series is the discovery that the car has a bad rotor bearing requiring the replacement of the hub assembly, and that the rotors must be turned.

These repairs will be done tomorrow after the part is in, but I need my car to get home from work and my child to school before I return the car to the shop tomorrow morning. All told, the round trip will be about 75 miles (32 miles each way) with one bumpy gravel road involved in the school drop-off.

My mechanic asked where I would be traveling and gave the car back to me, but after doing some reading, I've discovered that a bearing that goes bad while traveling could be highly problematic, potentially causing an accident.

Is my car safe to drive for another 75 miles before the work is done? It has been making a humming noise that gets louder as speed increases for about a month, but it has gotten rather bad this week.

A lot depends on how much play is already in the bearing. It cannot be diagnosed over the internet, isnt there a closer mechanic?

This mechanic is across the street from my work, and his price is right. If I took it to a mechanic closer to home, for what they were asking for the same work, I would not be able to get the work done until 1.5 weeks from now when I get paid next. So, sadly, no, it has to be this mechanic or no mechanic.

To be safe, I've just made alternate arrangements and will park it at the mechanic's shop for the night. I'd rather be overly cautious than have the tire come off the car while doing 65 on the highway! Thank you for the reply!
