My 1996 ford Taurus' transmission is slipping and doing some odd things. Sometimes it hesitates to go in the lower gears, it will rev up and then go into gear. Other times while turning it will come out of gear and not come back in until the car is straightened out. I have not flushed out the fluid but the fluid level is good. Once the car gets to highway speed the car runs flawlessly. Do I have a bad tranny? My uncle's Taurus had similar simptoms and told me he had a sensor in the tranny replaced and it seemed to fix the problem. Could it be just a sensor? If so, what is this sensor called and where can I get it?

It could be a vehicle speed sensor, but the problem when turning doesn't fit that as the problem. Has the check engine light come on? Also, is the trans fluid clean and unburnt? Finally, are you checking it when the engine is at normal operating temp and running?

Let me know. Truthfully, it sounds low on fluid, but it could even be a weak front pump.

It does have the check engine light on and I checked the fluid level when the car was warm.

You need to have the computer scanned to identify where the problem is coming from. If the light is on, there will be a code saved. Many parts stores will scan it for free, so have that checked and let me know what you find.
