We have a 1993 ford Taurus wagon with about 114000 miles. Several times now recently it has stalled and when a restart was attempted it failed initially. The car turned over really well it just didn't start.

If we wait for between 5 and 10 minutes and try again. The engine starts and runs like nothing weird happened. (It actually normally runs really nice!)

It has happned when the car was warmed up (ran for 5 or more minutes and also when the car has been running for less than a minute.

We had a local mechanic look at it once but because the problem couldn't be recreated nothing was found or corrected. (This was about a year ago)

Any ideas?

This is my daughter's car and I am no where around when it fails.

I may just swap it out the module as a precaution.

Is that the same thing as the ignition control module?

Ignition control module is the same
I am not the gay how like switching parts with out checking but since you dont have the car all the time you may replace it as it is very common failure when no spark

I finally was in the car and it happened.

I stopped the car, turned it off and left for about a minute. When I inserted the key and tried to start it it initially wouldn't although it turned over fine.

Here is what I noticed. When the key is turned all of the dash lights you expect to see on when the car key is in the running where on except for the "Check Engine" light.

I tired a lot of silly things but here is what I thought was interesting. I finally turned the key into the running position and waited. After about 15 seconds I heard a hum, the check engine light came on and the car started.

I know it's not the spark module because changed it as a precaution (gotta spare now!) I didn't replace the pick-up but I can't see how that would influence the check engine light not coming on.

What do you think?

When key on check engine light should be on if not few to suspect wiring relay and or ignition switch
constant control relay module located by upper radiator support
more important check for a good ground

The car cooperated and the check engine light wouldn't come on. I found the ccrm and tapped it light with a screw driver handle and the check engine light would come on and the car would start. I was able to repeat that 5 or more times.

I replaced the ccrm with a new one and lo and behold The check engine light came on right away and never failed to come on the many, many times I tried it.

Only time will tell but I'm pretty confident that was the cause of the problem.

Thanks! Thanks! Thanks!
