Ranger Tranny/Speedo problem (donation submitted)

After a day of skiing, I started up my ranger and when I started driving in D, it would not shift out of first gear. Also the speedometer needle did not move from zero and the ABS light went on. This happened all at once. When I switched the gear to 2, I was able to drive it in 2nd gear. While the car was driving in 2, I switched to D mode, however when I hit the gas pedal, the engine revved but the gear ws not engaged and the car was not able to accelerate. Once on the highway, I played with the drive modes, going from 2 to D, sometimes the 3rd and 4th gear would engaged but momentarily cut out so I ended up driving the car in 2 most of the way. Turned out my battery was weak, and after attempting to reset the CPU a few times, it eventually died. I replaced the battery, the car now shift from 1st to 2nd but the shift is very jerky. THE SPEDOMETER STILL DOES NOT WORK and the ABS light is still on. Any idea what the heck is going on?

What exactly is the sensor itself? Is it lodged in the actual differential like a bolt? I disconnected the cable, and took the mating part, which sits in the differential out. Is the part that sits in the differential the sensor or is the mating part attached to the cable the sensor? I am including a picture of the piece that sits in the differential...

HA! Amazing, the $12 ABS/speed sensor solved the problem. The transmission is as smooth shifting as ever and all the ABS/check engine lights are gone. The speedometer works too! And I was ready to drop over $1000 on a new transmission. Phew. Thank you so much for your help.
