When trying to start my powerstroke I have to sometimes bang the starter with a hammer to get the starter to work

Thats a common symptom when the starter is starting to go. What that does is realigns the bushings and it will start untill next time or next few times the vehicle is tried to start, which is when youll have to hit it again.
